Island Practice Manual

Performance
2025

Island Practice Manual is a transdisciplinary collaboration between Po-yun Kuo and Ma Pak Yin that conceptualizes the "island" as a contested and fluid site of geopolitical negotiation. By repurposing megaphones as dual signifiers of state authority and grassroots resistance, the artists orchestrate a choreography of overlapping accents and linguistic fragments to interrogate the friction between institutional discipline and individual autonomy.

This ongoing practice has been contextually re-activated at Falconbrook Primary School, London and Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre, Taipei, adapting its "unfinished instructions" to the specificities of diverse institutional architectures. Through the strategic deployment of sonic dissonance, the work invites audiences to inhabit the mnemonic gaps within collective history. It functions as a poetic rehearsal of subjectivity, exploring the precarious intervals where the body navigates the tension between geopolitical isolation and global connectivity.
